Why does the butterfly keyboard repair include a new battery?
Apple bonded the butterfly keyboard, battery and trackpad together into a single 'top case' assembly. We can't replace just the keyboard. The good news is you get a fresh battery as part of the same job.
How can I tell if I have a butterfly keyboard?
MacBook Pros from 2016 to 2019, and 12-inch MacBooks 2015 to 2017. Keys feel very shallow and clicky. If yours has noticeable travel and a slight spring-back, you have a scissor (current) keyboard.
Can I just replace one stuck key?
On scissor (post-2020) keyboards, sometimes yes. We replace the individual keycap and scissor mechanism. On butterfly keyboards no, full top-case is the only fix that lasts.
What about Apple's Keyboard Service Program for butterfly MacBooks?
Apple's program covered eligible MacBooks free up to 4 years from purchase. If your laptop is within that window, use Apple directly. Outside that window, we're cheaper than Apple's out-of-warranty price.
